We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 2nd instant (T.A.27746/1915) in which you ask us to furnish a reply to your letter of the 25th September (T.A.27328/15) regarding complaints as to the food supplied and the alleged bleeding of the men by the Chief Steward on board of the Transport "MANITOU" during the voyage to the Mediterranean (9th to 21st June 1915).

The "MANITOU" arrived in Bondon on January 29th last, this being the first opportunity we have had to make any enquiries except by letter, otherwise we would have given you an earlier reply. We, however, beg to remind you that we wrote to you under date of September 30th last in answer to your letter of September 25th giving you such information as we then had gleaned from documentary evidence.

As regards the complaint as to the food supplied, we

have ascertained that

1.

The Master of the "MANITOU" did not receive any

complaints.

2.

3.

The Victualling scale was posted in various parts of

the ship and meals were served according to the scale. The Commanding Officer frequently personally inspected

and tasted the food supplied and the food was daily inspected by the Officer of the day and the Quarter- master Sergeants.
